Stepping up the fight against deforestation: cosmetics ingredients concerned

Description

The regulation to combat imported deforestation in Europe was adopted by the European Council on May 16, and although its publication in the Official Journal is expected for the summer, it will come into force in December 2024. This regulation will have an impact on the cosmetics sector, as it targets commodities used extensively by the industry, including palm oil and its derivatives, cocoa, coffee and soy. To bring them onto the European market, operators will have to ensure traceability right back to the cultivation plot, assess the risks (deforestation, respect for indigenous peoples) according to the areas of supply, and put in place measures to mitigate these risks. Cosmed points out that, as the RSPO mass balance grade does not guarantee 0% deforestation, buyers in the cosmetics industry should ask their suppliers about the tools and practices in place to guarantee the compliance of imported products.
